Congressional Workers Union
Congressional staff are organizing!
To better serve the public and improve working conditions, Congressional staff are organizing to secure fair pay, safer workplaces, and dignity on the job.
What We’ve Been Up to
In late February 2022, we approached Congressman Andy Levin with draft legislation to give staff the protected right to bargain collectively.
Thanks to the work of staff members in Congressman Levin’s office, public pressure built by the Dear White Staffers Instagram account, and our own efforts in the press, H.Res. 1096 passed the House on May 10th, 2022.
Since the passage of the House Resolution on May 11, 2022, we filed the necessary paperwork to become an official labor organization ahead of July 18, 2022, the date on which the resolution took effect.
In our first year, we have organized 18 offices and won our first contract. Check here to see what else we've been up to!
We continue to facilitate conversations with interested staffers in order to help them start organizing their offices, and to prepare units to bargain for strong contracts at the table.
We have been building solidarity among staffers, as well as with other outside unions, including relationships and support from IFPTE, AFA-CWA, UAW, Teamsters, Starbucks Workers United, ALU, and many others!
